According to Iraf, Mohsen Rezaei, one of Afghanistan’s most prominent and experienced taekwondo athletes, was withdrawn from the national team roster just days before the start of the Asian Games qualification tournament.
The competition is set to begin in six days in Ulaanbaatar and holds critical importance for many Asian countries seeking to secure spots at the Asian Games.
Rezaei had been training with the national team in recent weeks and was reportedly in good form, but worsening sinusitis symptoms prompted doctors to recommend surgery.
Following his physician’s advice, Rezaei must undergo a recovery and rest period, as competing could exacerbate his condition. Consequently, despite his technical importance to the team, the Afghanistan Taekwondo Federation was forced to remove him from the delegation.
The federation expressed regret over the absence of its captain, noting that Rezaei has been a key and reliable figure for the team over the years, consistently representing Afghanistan with dedication and determination.
The organization wished him a full recovery and emphasized that his return post-treatment will be crucial for the national team.
Tournament Details and Impact on the Team
The Asian taekwondo qualification tournament in Mongolia will feature both men’s and women’s divisions, with various Asian countries competing for the limited spots available.
The event typically attracts the continent’s top athletes, and the results play a direct role in shaping final national team rosters for the Asian Games.
While Rezaei’s absence may affect Afghanistan’s performance, the coaching staff remains optimistic that alternative options will help mitigate the gap left by his withdrawal.
