Iran said U.S. President Donald Trump suspended plans for military action against the country after Tehran warned regional states against supporting what it described as Washington’s military adventurism, according to Iranian officials and statements released over the weekend.
According to IRAF, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi held a series of diplomatic consultations with senior regional officials, including Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan’s army chief, Hakan Fidan, Turkey’s foreign minister, and Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister. During the talks, Araghchi discussed what Iran described as the destabilizing consequences of U.S. actions and said Iran’s armed forces were fully prepared to deliver a decisive and proportionate response to any attack.
At the same time, Iran’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement describing any naval blockade as a clear act of aggression.
Separately, the Foreign Ministry said Araghchi met with Iran’s ambassadors to Ethiopia and Portugal on Aug. 1 and 2. During meetings with Ali Akbar Rezaei, Iran’s ambassador to Ethiopia, and Seyed Majid Tafreshi, Iran’s ambassador to Portugal, Araghchi stressed expanding bilateral relations, strengthening cooperation in international forums, including BRICS, and using all diplomatic capacities to safeguard Iran’s national interests. The ministry also hosted the 72nd meeting of the government’s information and media coordination bodies attended by Elias Hazrati and Fatemeh Mohajerani.
The ministry said the focus of Iran’s latest diplomatic efforts was a series of telephone calls on Aug. 2. In conversations with Asim Munir and Hakan Fidan, Araghchi warned that continued U.S. military actions could push the region toward broader instability and said Iran remained at the highest level of readiness to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a separate call with Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Araghchi outlined Iran’s position on what he described as the risks posed by joint U.S. and Israeli actions. He said any regional country that participated in or allowed its territory or bases to be used for attacks against Iran would face a direct and decisive response from Iran’s armed forces and would bear responsibility for the consequences.
In a statement issued on Aug. 1, Iran’s Foreign Ministry thanked the country’s armed forces for what it described as defending the nation and said the continued naval blockade of Iran’s ports and commercial shipping violated international law and constituted an act of military aggression. The ministry also cited Article 51 of the U.N. Charter, saying Iran reserved its right to use all means of legitimate self-defense and would continue defensive operations until what it called hostile actions had ended.
Iranian officials’ statements came as several international media outlets assessed the latest tensions. According to the report, The Wall Street Journal cited Pentagon assessments warning that a continued naval blockade of Iran would significantly increase the risk of direct confrontation in the Strait of Hormuz. Axios, citing informed U.S. officials, reported that diplomatic messages sent by Tehran to Gulf states had heightened concerns in Riyadh and Abu Dhabi over the possibility that energy infrastructure could be targeted in the event of conflict.
The report added that Fox News, citing the White House, said Washington continued to keep military options on the table, while Foreign Policy wrote that Iran’s deterrence strategy and threats of retaliatory action against U.S. regional bases had complicated Pentagon operational calculations.
