A senior Democratic lawmaker has requested documents from FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, concerning his communications and cooperation with U.S. President Donald Trump, as part of a congressional inquiry into Trump’s reported involvement in FIFA decisions.
According to IRAF, Rep. Jamie Raskin, the ranking Democrat on the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, sent a formal letter to Infantino requesting records related to FIFA’s contacts with Trump and his associates. The letter also asks the FIFA president to appear before Congress to answer questions about the organization’s relationship with the White House.
The inquiry focuses on two issues highlighted by Raskin.
The first concerns the case of U.S. national team forward Folarin Balogun, whose suspension following a red card was reportedly overturned after Trump intervened by telephone. Infantino has maintained that the decision was made by FIFA’s independent disciplinary committee.
The second involves the creation of a FIFA Peace Award, which Infantino reportedly established without consulting FIFA’s governing board before presenting it to Trump in December 2025. According to the report, the award had no publicly announced selection criteria or independent judging panel.
Democrats currently lack the majority in the House of Representatives to compel Infantino’s testimony. However, if the party wins control of the chamber in the November midterm elections, Raskin could assume the chairmanship of the Judiciary Committee and gain subpoena authority, potentially turning the current inquiry into a formal congressional investigation.
FIFA and Infantino have not publicly responded to the congressional request, leaving unanswered questions about the nature of the FIFA president’s ties with Trump.
