Islamabad and Riyadh Seek to Help Reduce Tensions in the Region

Tehran-IRAF- sources close to the recent meeting between Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and five‑star General Syed Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman told Pakistan’s Geo News that Riyadh and Islamabad are committed to helping de‑escalate tensions in the region.

The report stated that Pakistan’s leaders reaffirmed their commitment to defending Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and stressed that de‑escalation and the promotion of unity among Muslim countries are essential.

Both sides also emphasized their longstanding policy of avoiding conflicts in the Muslim world and working to prevent the escalation of tensions into a broader confrontation among Muslim countries.

It is worth noting that before traveling to Riyadh last Thursday, Pakistan’s prime minister held a telephone conversation with Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The Pakistani government—including both the president and the prime minister—condemned the aggression of the United States and Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran and expressed support for Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Many Pakistani political parties, especially opposition groups in parliament, while supporting Iran’s legitimate right to self‑defense, have called for Islamabad to play a more active role in supporting Iran’s rights in the face of aggression.

The joint military aggression by the United States and the Israeli regime against the Islamic Republic of Iran began on the morning of Saturday, 28 February, while indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States were underway with mediation by several regional countries.

Following the start of the joint military aggression by the United States and Israel, the Islamic Republic of Iran delivered a firm, targeted, and proportionate response. Within the framework of this legitimate response, military and security positions of the Israeli regime in various cities of occupied Palestine, as well as bases and deployment centers of U.S. forces in the region, were targeted by precise missile, drone, and aerial strikes.

Officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran have emphasized that these operations were carried out within the framework of the inherent right of self‑defense under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, with the aim of deterrence, preventing the continuation of aggression, and imposing costs on the aggressors.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has warned that any continuation or expansion of aggression will be met with a stronger and broader response.
