Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is travelling to Tehran on Sunday to follow up on previous agreements between Iran and Pakistan, with Iranian officials saying the visit is focused on bilateral relations and does not involve any specific message from the United States.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said Naqvi’s visit was taking place “within the framework of bilateral relations and follow-up on agreements reached previously at the level of the two countries’ leaders.”
Speaking about the development of relations between Tehran and Islamabad in recent months, Baghaei said: “Iran-Pakistan relations are developing in various fields, and Tehran emphasizes making use of the cultural and historical ties and commonalities between the two nations to strengthen cooperation.”
Baghaei said the main focus of Naqvi’s visit was to follow up on previous understandings and agreements. He added that a Pakistani economic minister could also accompany Naqvi during the trip.
Iran Denies U.S. Message
Baghaei dismissed speculation that Naqvi’s visit could involve the delivery of a message or a specific proposal from Washington.
“I am not aware of the existence of such a message, and no issue in this regard has been raised so far,” he said.
He added that Pakistan, as a country active in a number of regional issues, has the capacity to raise regional matters, but stressed that Naqvi’s visit was primarily taking place within the framework of bilateral relations.
Diplomatic Context
The visit comes as Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said in an interview with Al Jazeera that Tehran had conveyed its conditions for resuming negotiations to Washington through Qatari and Pakistani intermediaries and was now awaiting a response from the U.S. president.
Despite these diplomatic contacts, Tehran has emphasized that Naqvi’s visit is bilateral in nature and is aimed at following up on previous agreements between Iran and Pakistan.
