Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi has asked Kyrgyzstan to use its upcoming two-year term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council to support the Taliban’s positions and represent what he called “Afghanistan’s voice” in international engagements.
As reported by IRAF, Muttaqi made the request during a phone call on Tuesday, September 15, with Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubaev, according to a statement issued by the Taliban Foreign Ministry.
The statement described Kyrgyzstan’s election to the Security Council for the 2027–2028 term as an “important achievement” and said Muttaqi stressed the need for closer cooperation between Kabul and Bishkek in this regard.
The two sides also discussed the exchange of high-level delegations, regular political consultations, strengthening communication channels and expanding bilateral relations, according to the Taliban.
Economic issues were also a major focus of the call, including expanding trade, increasing investment, implementing joint projects and strengthening regional cooperation between Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan.
The Taliban have sought to expand their relations with Central Asian countries since returning to power in 2021. However, Russia remains the only country to have formally recognized the group, while Afghanistan’s seat at the United Nations remains occupied by a diplomat representing the previous Afghan government.
The issue has repeatedly drawn criticism from the Taliban, which has sought greater recognition and a formal role in the international system.
