Tehran- IRAF- Mike Waltz, the U.S. representative to the United Nations, said during a UN Security Council meeting on Afghanistan that Washington has no trust in the Taliban government.
Referring to four years of Taliban rule in Afghanistan, he claimed: “The policies of this group have created a humanitarian disaster and an economic crisis for the people.”
Waltz emphasized that restricting women’s rights, limiting access to basic services, and interference in international aid are serious signs of the Taliban’s lack of goodwill.
The U.S. representative also pointed to the detention of American citizens and accused the Taliban of using “hostage diplomacy,” adding: “It is impossible to build trust with a group that detains citizens and ignores the needs of its people.”
Waltz also noted that the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) is the largest special political mission in the world, yet Afghan female staff are not even allowed to enter UN offices.
He concluded by welcoming the extension of the UN Security Council’s sanctions monitoring team’s mandate on the Taliban and stressed that the people of Afghanistan deserve responsible governance from the Taliban and full access to their human rights.
Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also wrote on X that Afghanistan is a country that supports unjust detentions.
He emphasized that the Taliban government must immediately release “Dennis Quill,” “Mahmoud Habibi,” and other detained American citizens.
Rubio added that the Taliban uses “terrorist tactics to gain political concessions,” but such methods will not work against the United States government.
The U.S. Secretary of State claimed that the unjust detention of citizens is a clear violation of human rights and that the international community must confront such actions.
