India’s Education Minister Resigns After Student-Led Protests Over Exam Irregularities

India’s education minister has resigned following weeks of nationwide protests sparked by allegations of corruption and mismanagement in the country’s national examination system, in a move widely seen as a victory for student demonstrators.

According to Iraf, the protests erupted amid growing public dissatisfaction with the Ministry of Education over alleged irregularities in the administration of nationwide examinations.

The demonstrations, led primarily by students and young people, spread across several Indian cities as protesters called for sweeping reforms to the education system, greater transparency in the examination process, and accountability from government officials.

The “Cockroach Movement,” which has emerged as a symbol of youth activism in India, gained momentum through widespread support on social media and among various sections of society. As public pressure intensified, the government accepted the resignation of the education minister.

Following the announcement, protest representatives said the government had agreed to consider several key demands, including reforms to the national examination system and a broader review of education policies. Organizers said they would suspend nationwide demonstrations if the government took meaningful steps toward implementing those commitments.

Political observers said the minister’s resignation underscores the growing political influence of India’s younger generation. They added that the success of the “Cockroach Movement” could have lasting implications for future civic activism and the government’s response to public demands.
