Ayatollah Sistani’s Fatwa (Religious Decree): Supporting the People of Iran is a “Religious Duty”

Tehran-IRAF- Grand Ayatollah Sistani, the senior Shiite marja’ in Najaf, emphasized in a religious fatwa (decree) that public support for Iran and solidarity with it is a “religious duty.”

In this fatwa, he stressed that safeguarding the stability of the Islamic system and preventing partition plots through broad public participation and solidarity in public squares at the present time constitutes a collective obligation.

In response to an inquiry asking: “What is the ruling on gathering in public squares and mosques to confront the sedition of vandals and plans aimed at weakening the pillars and institutions of the Islamic system, as well as to eliminate despair, prevent the destruction of public property and moral corruption, discourage the enemy, support the ideals of the Islamic Revolution, and prevent chaos under the current sensitive circumstances?” Ayatollah Sistani said: Participation in public squares, under these circumstances, is a collective obligation.

Grand Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Sistani had also stated in a statement last Wednesday that military attacks against Iranian territory have continued for several days and so far, have resulted in the martyrdom of many citizens, including heroes defending the homeland, dozens of children, and a number of innocent civilians. The war has also caused extensive damage to public and private property.

The senior Shiite authority in Najaf emphasized that the supreme religious authority strongly condemns this unjust war and calls on all Muslims and freedom‑loving people of the world to condemn it and express solidarity with the oppressed people of Iran. Once again, we call on all influential international parties and countries of the world—especially Islamic countries—to make every effort to stop the war and to create a peaceful and just solution to Iran’s nuclear issue in accordance with international law.

He had previously also called for unity among the Iranian people, stating that they should not allow the aggressors to achieve their malicious objectives.

It is noteworthy that the joint military aggression by the United States and the Zionist regime against the Islamic Republic of Iran—which resulted in the martyrdom of Ayatollah Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution—began at dawn on 28 February. This occurred while indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States, mediated by several regional countries, were underway.
