Widespread Coverage in Afghan Media of the Selection of Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s New Leader

Tehran-IRAF- the state‑run Bakhtar News Agency reported that Iran’s leadership council announced that Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei has been elected as the third leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran after obtaining a majority of votes.

According to the report, the decision was made during a special meeting and in accordance with Iran’s constitution.

Afghanistan National Television, citing a report by the Tasnim News Agency, also stated that Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of Seyyed Ali Khamenei, was appointed as the third leader of Iran by a decisive vote of the Assembly of Experts.

Toloo’ News, in a report, reviewed the biography of Iran’s new leader and wrote that Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, born in 1969 in Mashhad, completed his primary education at Alavi School and later went to Qom to continue his religious studies.

The outlet also referred to his brief presence on the frontlines during the Iran‑Iraq war.

Ariana News also reported that the announcement of Iran’s new leader came as the Iran war has entered its second week and global oil prices have surpassed $100 per barrel.

According to Ariana News, Mojtaba Khamenei had previously been considered one of the main candidates to succeed his father.

The newspaper Hasht‑e Sobh wrote in a short report that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been chosen as Iran’s new leader.

Etela’at Rooz newspaper also reported that Iran’s Assembly of Experts, in an extraordinary meeting, selected Mojtaba Khamenei by a decisive vote of its members as the third leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Pajvak News Agency, citing Iranian media, reported that Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was elected as Iran’s new religious leader after securing a majority of votes.

Amu TV also announced that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ali Khamenei, Iran’s former leader, has officially been introduced as the country’s new leader.

According to the network, Iran’s Assembly of Experts, which is composed of clerics, confirmed him as the third leader of the Islamic Republic by a decisive majority vote.

In recent days, the selection of Iran’s new leader has become one of the major news topics in Afghan media, and many of these outlets have described it as an important development in the political dynamics of the region.
