Richard Bennett: Afghanistan Under Taliban Rule Faces “a Multitude of Simultaneous Crises”

Tehran- IRAF- Bennett stated today on Thursday, February 26, at the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva that the people of Afghanistan are grappling with numerous concurrent crises.

He identified several major shocks, including economic contraction amid population growth, a sharp decline in international aid, the consequences of climate change, such as recurring droughts and devastating earthquakes, and the forced deportation of more than 2.7 million Afghan migrants from neighboring countries over the past year.

Taliban rule: the most significant shock for Afghanistan

Continuing his remarks, the UN Special Rapporteur described Taliban rule as the primary factor underlying all these challenges. Bennett characterized Afghanistan’s current governing system as “an extremist administration” which, according to him, has committed “gross human rights violations.”

He stressed that this issue represents the most significant shock facing the country.

New report on women’s right to health

Bennett has dedicated his latest report specifically to the issue of the right to health for Afghan women and girls.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights is also expected to present a comprehensive report to the Council on the overall human rights situation in Afghanistan.

Earlier, Bennett’s special report to the Human Rights Council—based on interviews with 137 Afghan citizens from 29 provinces, highlighted the systematic exclusion of women from managerial and healthcare sectors and emphasized the complete collapse of Afghanistan’s healthcare system.
