Reflection of the Holy Month of Ramadan on Afghan Social Media: From Self-Purification to Helping the Needy

Tehran-IRAF-Afghan users, on the eve of Ramadan, have marked the beginning of the month by sharing congratulatory messages, mystical reflections, cultural announcements, and reports of charitable activities.

Many of these messages emphasize self-improvement, good character, a return to spirituality, engagement with the Qur’an, and attention to those in need.

Hojjat ol-Islam Fasihi Ghaznavi, in a note titled “Speaking the Truth and Accepting the Truth in the Light of the Holy Qur’an,” described Ramadan as a month of returning to truth and reflecting upon divine verses.

He wrote: The Holy Qur’an is the Book of Truth; God Himself is “Al-Haqq” (The Truth), and the mission of the prophets is to establish truth among people. In such a school, speaking the truth is difficult—and accepting it is even more difficult—because telling the truth requires courage, and accepting it requires humility.

Citing the verse, “So give good tidings to My servants who listen to what is said and follow the best of it,” he emphasized the importance of listening to truthful speech and following what is best, urging his audience to enrich this Qur’anic discussion through thoughtful critique.

Mohammad Aref Jafari, a seminary student and cleric, highlighted the importance of self-knowledge and knowledge of God during Ramadan, describing the reading of beneficial books as “the best act of worship for self-discovery.” He encouraged his followers to visit libraries and make use of valuable books.

Meanwhile, reports of charitable activities have also circulated on social media. Abdul Hamid Ebrahimi announced the distribution of iftar meals to needy families in villages around Markaz Behsud district of Maidan Wardak province. This initiative was welcomed by users, many describing it as an example of solidarity and social cooperation during Ramadan.

This comes as some field reports point to widespread economic hardships in various Afghan cities during the holy month.

Mohammad Sharif Moradi, in a message, described Ramadan as the “month of mercy, blessing, and forgiveness,” and the Nights of Qadr as a unique opportunity to seek divine forgiveness and the acceptance of prayers. He urged believers not to forget the needy during these blessed days and to walk the path of goodness and justice.

Qasim Hamidi, a Facebook user, shared a narration from the Prophet of Islam, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), describing Ramadan as the “month of seeking forgiveness, the month of fasting, and the month of supplication,” emphasizing its virtues. The hadith was cited from the book Fada’il al-Ashhur al-Thalatha (The Virtues of the Three Months).

A review of content shared on social media shows that alongside congratulatory and spiritual messages, there has been considerable attention to cultural programs, library activities, Qur’anic gatherings, and charitable initiatives.

Sayyed Habibullah Taheri, in a Facebook post congratulating the arrival of Ramadan, wrote: Ramadan is a valuable opportunity for self-development and strengthening individual and social skills. In addition to fasting, we can strive for spiritual growth, improved human relationships, and personal advancement.

He further noted that during Ramadan, it is beneficial to focus on strengthening life skills such as self-control and emotional management, patience and tolerance, empathy and altruism, and time management.

Mehdi Alizadeh, another active Facebook user, emphasized forgiveness, writing: Ramadan is the best opportunity to forgive and overlook one another’s mistakes. We are all human and prone to error, and we may have hurt others along life’s path. The holy month of Ramadan offers a good opportunity to forgive and move beyond one another’s faults.

This year, as in previous years, Ramadan is not only present in mosques and homes through acts of worship, but also has a strong and inspiring presence in the digital sphere and across social media platforms in Afghanistan.
