UN: 4.2 Million People in Afghanistan in Need of Shelter and Non-Food Aid

Tehran- IRAF- the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Afghanistan has issued a serious warning regarding the number of people in need of shelter in the country. It estimates that in 2026, around 4.2 million people in Afghanistan will urgently require shelter and non-food items.

The international organization emphasized in its statement that providing adequate housing is not only a basic necessity but also the first and most crucial step toward achieving a stable Afghanistan.

The statement noted that without addressing the shelter crisis, discussions about reconstruction and stability in the country are essentially meaningless.

Call for Immediate Action

Highlighting the urgency of the issue, UN-Habitat called on the international community and humanitarian organizations to take immediate action to prevent the crisis from worsening.

Earlier, OCHA reported that due to natural disasters, the return of refugees, and economic challenges, this crisis has been exacerbated. It stressed that more than $160 million in funding is required to provide emergency shelters and food supplies for 881,000 people.

Additionally, Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) warned that thousands of Afghans, including children and women, are left without shelter and basic facilities in temporary camps during the winter, putting their lives at risk. The organization urged the international community to act immediately to prevent a widespread humanitarian disaster.
