Afghanistan Embassy in Tehran Closed on Anniversary of Soviet Withdrawal

Tehran – IRAF – Afghanistan’s embassy in Tehran announced in a statement that it will be closed tomorrow (Sunday, February 15) on the occasion of the anniversary of the withdrawal of former Soviet forces from Afghanistan. No consular services will be provided on that day.

According to a statement by the Taliban’s Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, the 26th day of the month of Bahman (February 15) has been designated as a nationwide public holiday in Afghanistan.

This day commemorates a decisive event in Afghanistan’s modern history:  1989, the last Soviet soldier crossed the Friendship Bridge and permanently left Afghan soil.

The decade-long presence of the Red Army in Afghanistan was not only a geopolitical defeat for Moscow but also caused massive human and financial losses for the Afghan people.

Hundreds of thousands of people were killed, and thousands were permanently disabled as a result of this occupation.

Afghanistan’s economy also suffered a severe crisis during this period. Many cities and villages were reduced to rubble, schools and irrigation systems were destroyed, and vital infrastructure was ruined.

The Soviet presence in Afghanistan was not merely a military invasion; it turned the country into the site of the deadliest proxy war of the Cold War era between the two superpowers of East and West.
