Tehran- IRAF- The UN Security Council will decide later this month on the extension of the mandate of the Afghanistan sanctions monitoring team, with a draft resolution to be put to a vote in this regard.
The decision to extend the team’s mandate is being made at a time when the Security Council continues to evaluate the scope and effectiveness of international sanctions related to Afghanistan.
The current mandate of the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, which supports the 1988 Afghanistan Sanctions Committee, is set to expire on February 17.
This committee is responsible for overseeing the implementation of international sanctions against individuals and groups associated with the Taliban. The measures monitored by this committee include asset freezes, travel bans, and arms embargoes.
By providing expert assessments, reports, and policy recommendations, the monitoring team supports the 1988 Committee as well as UN member states in the effective implementation of the sanctions regime. The team is also responsible for managing the list of sanctioned individuals and entities and for reviewing exemption requests.
