Joint Statement by Chinese and Pakistani Foreign Ministers: Regional Cooperation Key to Peace and Development in Afghanistan

According to IRAF News Agency, the ministers reaffirmed their commitment to continue leveraging two key mechanisms: the Trilateral Foreign Ministers’ Dialogue between China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan and the China-Bangladesh-Pakistan Cooperation Framework. The goal of these initiatives is to achieve new outcomes in regional collaboration.

Both sides agreed to maintain close communication and coordination on Afghanistan-related issues. They, together with the international community, encourage the Taliban government to establish an inclusive political framework, adopt moderate policies, and promote good-neighborly relations. The statement also highlighted the importance of Kabul playing a constructive role in supporting Afghanistan’s stability, development, and integration into the international community.

The ministers stressed the necessity of preventing terrorist groups from using Afghan territory against other countries. This statement comes amid repeated assurances by the Taliban that Afghan soil will not be allowed to pose a threat to neighboring states.

Earlier, Mohammad Sadeq Khan, Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, raised Islamabad’s concerns regarding the presence of large numbers of terrorists near Afghanistan during a meeting with China’s Special Representative.

Tensions over the presence of TTP (Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan) in Afghanistan have strained Kabul-Islamabad relations, leading to cross-border clashes, human casualties, and major disruptions to bilateral trade. Three rounds of negotiations between the Taliban and Pakistan in Doha, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia failed to yield results.

Separately, in December, a drone attack targeted a Chinese gold-mining company, and gunfire at a state-owned Chinese enterprise led to several Chinese casualties. Following these incidents, the Chinese embassy in Dushanbe urged Chinese citizens and companies to leave border areas and called on the Tajik government to take “all necessary measures” to protect Chinese investments and nationals.

In response, the Taliban expressed regret over the attacks, attributing them to an “unknown group,” and reiterated that Afghanistan under their control does not pose a threat to its neighbors.
