Karim Khorram: Venezuela Developments Threaten Stability in Afghanistan and Beyond

According to IRAF News Agency, Khorram shared his analysis on X today (Sunday, December 4, 2026), calling the U.S. attack on Venezuela a sign of a war-prone start to 2026.

He added that the United States began the year with missile strikes on Nigeria and continued this pattern on the third day of the year by attacking Venezuela and detaining its president and his wife. Khurram argued that the incident reflects a broader trend of escalating use of force in international relations.

Warning on the Erosion of International Law
The former Afghan minister stated that; actions like this gradually undermine international law, diplomatic norms, state sovereignty, and the UN Charter, allowing “force” and “the law of the jungle” to prevail. He warned that, international law and diplomatic principles are in a state of “collapse.”

Regional Implications and Impact on Afghanistan and Neighbors
Khorram emphasized that, the attack on Venezuela will have negative repercussions for the region and, naturally, for Afghanistan. He noted that, China would be most affected, as it purchases roughly 80% of Venezuela’s oil. The strike puts Chinese investments in Venezuela at significant risk and could mark the start of a push to exclude China from Latin America.

Khorram also suggested that, the Venezuela operation could be a precursor to a potential strike against Iran. He explained that the U.S., anticipating the possibility of the Strait of Hormuz being closed in the event of an attack on Iran, is using Venezuelan oil as a strategic alternative. He highlighted that Venezuela’s oil reserves are comparable to those of Saudi Arabia.

He concluded by warning that if this scenario unfolds, Afghanistan’s two neighboring countries (likely Iran and Pakistan) would be directly affected, which would naturally have immediate consequences for Afghanistan itself.

U.S. Attack on Venezuela and Maduro Abduction
The U.S. strikes early Saturday (December 3) targeted Venezuela’s oil and mineral resources and were reported to extend beyond Caracas to include Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira states. Hours later, Donald Trump announced the abduction of Nicolás Maduro and his wife, along with the issuance of new indictments against them in the U.S., escalating the situation and triggering a wave of reactions across the region and globally.
