Tehran-IRAF- A new round of indirect Iran–U.S. negotiations was held on Friday (February 6) in Muscat, the capital of Oman. Reports indicate that Oman’s foreign minister was responsible for conveying messages and positions between the Iranian and American delegations.
Positive Assessments from Both Sides
Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, described this round of talks as a “good start.” Esma’il Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also stressed that negotiators from both sides agreed on the continuation of the talks.
Trump’s Remarks: Iran Is “More Ready”
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump said on the sidelines of his trip that Iran is “more ready” to reach an agreement with the United States compared to a year and a half ago.
The U.S. president added: “They are now showing greater willingness to get things done.” Trump described this round of talks as “very good” and emphasized that the consultations would continue “next week.”
These talks are continuing as both sides have previously underscored the importance of maintaining the diplomatic track.
However, the U.S. president claimed that if no agreement is reached, the consequences would be very severe, adding that “we have a massive navy and a large fleet that is moving in that direction.”
Trump also signed an executive order imposing a 25 percent tariff on countries that trade with Iran.
On the other hand, the Islamic Republic of Iran has repeatedly emphasized that it entered these talks with the aim of safeguarding the Iranian nation’s legitimate rights to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, while also assessing the seriousness and good faith of the other side.
Iran has also made it clear that raising issues outside the nuclear framework, including defense or regional matters, is not on the agenda of the Muscat talks.
