Security Council meeting: Concerns over terrorist activity in Afghanistan

Tehran- IRAF- Representatives of China and Pakistan at the United Nations Security Council session declared their deep concern over the widespread presence and activity of terrorist groups in Afghanistan.

Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, emphasized in yesterday’s meeting that after the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, terrorist groups such as the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Baloch separatist militants have taken “a new lease on life” under the shadow of this rule.

He added: “These groups operate freely in Afghan territory and are responsible for horrific terrorist attacks in Pakistan.”

He recalled a recent incident in Balochistan in which 48 civilians, including five women and three children, were killed, and in response, Pakistani security forces eliminated 145 militants.

Referring to the heavy costs of his country’s war on terrorism, the Pakistani representative said: “Pakistan is at the forefront of this fight; more than 90,000 people have lost their lives and we have suffered enormous economic losses.”

Ahmed stressed: “Pakistan is determined to eradicate these groups and expose their supporters and accomplices.”

China’s Concern over the Presence of Terrorist Networks in Afghanistan

Simultaneously, China’s representative on the Security Council, like other principal members of the Council, expressed concern over the activity of groups such as Al-Qaeda, ISIS, and Uighur separatists in Afghanistan.

He asked the Taliban to take decisive action against these groups and referred to an ISIS attack on a Chinese restaurant in Kabul, which demonstrates a direct threat to this country’s interests.

However, with the exception of India, all neighboring and regional countries have so far expressed concern over the activity and presence of terrorists on Afghan soil. This indicates the shared concern of the international community regarding the stability and security of Afghanistan and its consequences for the region.

On the other hand, Taliban officials have consistently denied reports regarding the presence and activity of terrorist groups in Afghanistan.

They emphasize that under Taliban rule, Afghan soil has not been used against any of the neighboring or regional countries.
