Red Cross: Millions of Afghans Face Acute Hunger

Tehran- IRAF- Alexander Matteo, the Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), said that the suspension of global humanitarian assistance has had tragic and catastrophic consequences for the people of Afghanistan.

In a video message, Matteo stressed that the reduction in humanitarian aid has forced children into labor, girls into early marriage, and families to endure the loss of their very young children.

Matteo added that hundreds of aid centers across Afghanistan have been shut down or are facing serious difficulties due to the decline in humanitarian assistance.

Noting that cold weather and hunger have affected millions of Afghans, he said that in many villages hunger had existed for years; however, people were previously able to turn to aid centers during emergencies, whereas these centers have now closed following the suspension of aid.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated that in the year 2026, Afghanistan will remain one of the world’s most significant and largest humanitarian challenges.
