Tehran- IRAF- Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, in a press conference with journalists, defended the performance of his country’s armed forces in the Afghanistan war and emphasized the heavy costs of the mission, following remarks by Trump about NATO’s presence in Afghanistan.
The Canadian Prime Minister defended his country’s armed forces in the Afghanistan war and stressed the need to respect the “extraordinary” efforts of Canadian soldiers.
Carney, detailing the military involvement, said: “Over 13 years, Canada deployed 40,000 troops to Afghanistan.” He emphasized that during this mission, 158 soldiers and one Canadian diplomat lost their lives.
He added that 30 Canadian soldiers have received the United States’ Bronze Star Medal for their bravery.
Silence on Trump’s Controversial Remarks
When asked by journalists whether he would ask Donald Trump, the U.S. President, to apologize for his recent statements, the Canadian Prime Minister gave no answer.
Previously, in an interview with Fox News, Trump had claimed that NATO’s role in Afghanistan was insignificant and that the United States never needed NATO allies.
These remarks drew sharp reactions from NATO, with some demanding an apology from Trump. Among them, Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, called Trump’s statements “insulting” and “disastrous.”
