Deputy UN Secretary-General: Restrictions on Afghan Women’s Education and Work Must Be Lifted

Tehran- IRAF- Rosemary DiCarlo, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations for Political and Peace Affairs, met with Taliban officials, Afghan women, and representatives of civil society during her recent visit to Afghanistan.

DiCarlo expressed deep concern over the restrictions imposed on Afghan women and girls, emphasizing the need to immediately lift these restrictions on women’s access to education, employment, and public life.

Encouraging Taliban Participation in Doha Process

The Deputy Secretary-General encouraged the Taliban to actively participate in the Doha process and fulfill their international commitments, considering it essential for Afghanistan’s reintegration into the global community.

Emphasis on Humanitarian Aid and Cooperation with Civil Society

She also requested the lifting of restrictions on Afghan female employees of the United Nations and emphasized the importance of freely transferring humanitarian aid across borders, seeking full cooperation from the Taliban.

Meanwhile, Amir Khan Muttaqi, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Taliban, provided a report on Afghanistan’s political and security situation, as well as measures taken to manage migration, and requested the lifting of banking restrictions and the release of Afghanistan’s frozen assets.

Serajuddin Haqhani, Acting Minister of Interior of the Taliban, also discussed the development of interaction between Afghanistan and the global community, cooperation in combating narcotics, strengthening economic stability, lifting some restrictions, and increasing the effectiveness of UN humanitarian aid with Rosemary DiCarlo.

Rosemary DiCarlo announced that the working groups established during the third round of Doha negotiations will hold their next meeting in Kabul.

This meeting was part of ongoing efforts to continue dialogue between the United Nations and the Taliban government, exploring ways to engage in Afghanistan’s affairs.
