The Education of Girls in Afghanistan: UNICEF Calls for Immediate International Support

Tehran – IRAF – On the International Day of Education (Saturday, January 25), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), along with UNESCO, called for immediate and collective investment to protect education.

The agency emphasized that Afghanistan’s future depends on safe and inclusive education, and that no girl or boy should be left behind.

The European Union announced that, through various projects with UNICEF, it is investing millions of euros in the development of safe, gender-responsive, and high-quality education. This initiative focuses on those most at risk, including out‑of‑school children, girls, and children with disabilities.

The European Union will also provide €4.7 million to support literacy and vocational skills training for 7,500 youth and adults across five provinces of Afghanistan.

In addition, the EU stated that it is allocating more than €10 million to improve access to education in Afghanistan. The Union stressed that, quality and accessible education is a fundamental right and noted that, in cooperation with various partners, it is investing in diverse programs to ensure that no child is left behind.

UNICEF’s emphasis on the need to protect education comes at a time when the Taliban has banned women and girls from continuing their education beyond grade six.
