Donald Trump has threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act in response to the protests; this law allows the President to use military forces within the country to suppress riots.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that two battalions from the 11th Airborne Division are on standby for possible deployment.
The US Department of Justice has announced that protesters who disrupted a Sunday ceremony at a church in St. Paul city, will be investigated and may face federal charges.
Criticism from local officials and human rights activists
The Trump administration’s actions have been met with severe criticism from local leaders and civil rights activists.
Jacob Frey, Minneapolis Mayor, reacted to reports of potential federal force deployment, telling CNN: “It would not be fair, just, or constitutional.”
