Mohammad Mohaqiq, leader of the People’s Unity Party of Afghanistan and a member of the National Council for the Salvation of Afghanistan, condemned the assassination in a message, calling it a “heinous and treacherous incident.” Expressing sympathy with Sari’s family, he described Sari as one of the “distinguished generals and dedicated servants” of the former Afghan government.
Mohammad Alam Ezyar, a former member of the Afghan Parliament, deemed the event a “great loss”, stating: “This is the second time that commanders affiliated with the resistance bloc have been targeted for assassination inside Iran”.
Nezif Khorrami, a former Afghan police officer, described Sari in an emotional message as the “sincere son and true servant of the country”, claiming that Sari had previously expressed concern over the “unsafe security situation” in Tehran.
Zia Aryannejad, a former member of the Afghan Parliament, confirmed the news of the assassination, stating that Sari had sought refuge in Iran following the fall of the previous government and had played an active role in supporting emigrant military personnel in recent years.
Ata Mohammad Noor, leader of the Jamiat-e Islami Afghanistan, also condemned the assassination, describing Sari as a “courageous and hardworking individual” who played an “effective role and provided valuable services” in government missions, and “continuously served his compatriots and officers” during his exile.
He condemned the perpetrators of the incident, called for the serious pursuit of the planners and executors of the assassination, and asked for ‘God’s mercy and the highest level in paradise’ for the victims.
Ahmad Sa’eedi, an Afghan political analyst, also considered the assassination a “great loss for the Afghan immigrant community and the nation”, noting that the incident raises serious questions regarding the security of prominent Afghan figures in Iran. He called upon the Islamic Republic of Iran to identify and disclose the perpetrators and motives behind the attack with full transparency and offered condolences to the victims’ families.
Increased Audacity of Terror Networks
Meysam Mehdipour, Managing Director of Iraf News Agency, described the incident as “the second physical elimination of Afghan military personnel in the last four months”, warning: “this is not just an isolated incident; it is a sign of the increasing audacity of the assassination network inside the country”.
Details of the Assassination Incident
Based on initial reports, unidentified armed assailants opened fire on the vehicle carrying Ekramuddin Sari and his companions on Wednesday, December 24th.
One of his companions died at the scene, while Sari was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries, where he succumbed hours later.
Iranian officials have not yet made any official statements regarding the motive or the perpetrators of the attack.
Who Was General Ekramuddin Sari?
Ekramuddin Sari was a senior police commander during Afghanistan’s Republic era, and served as the police chief of Takhar Province for the last time.
Prior to that, he held several important security positions within the Afghan police structure and was known as one of the prominent anti-Taliban figures in the north of the country. Following the collapse of the previous Afghan government in 2021, Sari sought refuge in Iran.
In recent years, he played an active role in following up on the residency affairs of former Afghan military personnel in Iran—an action that served as an obstacle to the forced expulsion of many of them back to Afghanistan.
